Auctioneers: How do they do it? I went to a land auction for the first time and I was fascinated by the? auctioneer. He sounded just like those old time tobacco auctioneers that used to be on the Lucky Strike commercials. He talked really really fast. What impressed me most is that he auctioneered for over five hours without a break and at the end he sounded exactly like he did when he started. He wasn't hoarse of raspy or any less loud and rapid-fire than when he started. Does he have stainless steel vocal cords or is there a technique (or drug) that enables him to do that? BTW I wasn't sure what category to put this question in; it doesn't really fit any of the normal categories.
What percentage do auctioneers generally charge? I have spoken with an auctioneer about auctioning off a decent amount of household items and furniture. He quoted me 1/3 of the gross plus another $800 of my cut for advertising. He even mentioned that he might be bringing additional items here to auction off that would reduce the advertising costs but I would see none of that for in essence serving as his auction house. And he will be operating concessions here and it wasn't mentrioned that I would get a cut so I think it is fair to say I won't be seeing any of this money. Is this standard?
How much do real estate auctioneers get paid? If I were to run a real estate auction in the U.S., and took care of all marketing, the auction venue, registering people, closing the transaction, etc. and just needed to hire the person yelling "50, do I hear 50? 75? Going once..." - how much should that person be compensated? If I have a real estate license and I'm organizing the auction, does the auctioneer need a real estate license?
How can auctioneers justify taking almost 50% of the value of an antique, in commissions.? auctioneers will take 20% +vat from the vendor of a piece, and the same from the buyer, the buyer being mainly a dealer, would obviously give the vendor a much better deal, wanting to just make a nominal proffit, all auctioneers do not know what an item is really worth anyway, and only guess, based on previous sales, a dealer will know the difference, between good and bad. as his livelyhood depends on it. so why do vendors accept £50, for somthing a dealer has just paid £100, for.
Why do auctioneers speak the way they do? I understand that time is of the essence at auctions BUT, I was actually listening to them last night and picked up something he said frequently. "5000, starting bid, biddy, bum bid, jabbada jabbada 10, 000, I have 10000 umma gumm bumma." So now if the main reason is time......????why add in all that nonsense, why not just numbers? Someone please explain!

Is it worth it to hire an auctioneer? I have a couple thousand $ of vintage japanese kimonos/obis, as well as several antiques and collectibles. I can't have a garage sale (I live in an apartment), and ebay is so flooded with kimonos...they sell for a fraction of what they are worth. Is it worth it to deal with an auction house? What have your experiences been? Thank you.
Who do you report a dodgy auctioneer to? I know an auctioneer who regully shills his auctions , buys his clients items at the lowest posiible price (by not giving other people chance to bid) and even stealing items from other people lots. Who do I report this to? would it be trading standards and would they visit his auction to see it going on? any help appreciated.
What is the typical charge for an auctioneer for an estate sale? The departed's belongings (she had many!) will be inspected for value and then moved by the auctioneer to a community center. One auctioneer we considered charges a % fee, plus we/the customer pay for the hall ($160) plus advertising ($150 for the newspaper and internet). I am interested in others' experiences as far as what the appropiate/typical percentage split with the auctioneer should be. Or, if you are an auctioneer; pls let me know your % terms. Thanks!
How do I find a good auctioneer? Have contents of a house (in New England) to dispose of, many antiques, and I don't know what things are worth. Can anyone give tips on what to ask? What to avoid? What to watch out for? Thanks.
