What are some ways to get steep discounts on airline tickets?

Can I just go to the airport and fly stand by, I think it doesnt work but I've heard it might. Really what I'm asking is...there's got to be a way to get cheap tickets at the last minute for a flight that has open seats. How do I take advantage of this or am I just fantasizing?

1. Try getting your air ticket from Priceline.com They are reliable and attractive fares too. Most importantly if you could have flexibility with your flight departures/arrival dates. I tried using their services and impressed with the outcome.
