How can someone get first class airline tickets at a discounted rate on most any airline?

Setting in coach is so crammed. I am flying to Alaska from NC and the flight is very long. US air is terrible. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

1. try flying as a courier, some companies will pay for your entire flight! some will even pay for the flight and give you some cash!!!! google "travel as a courier" at the very least you can get a subsized flight and you make up the difference for the first class seat! Have a great flight
2. Check with the airlines when you check in. Airtran used to allow an upgrade for $35 to $70 (it has been a while since I have used it). If they don't have a reasonable rate, ask when you check in. If the first class seats aren't sold they might bump you. All they can do is tell you "no".
