My service engine light came on in my 1998 lincoln town car.?

i took it to both autozone and discount auto parts both got no readings at all on their hand computer. I think that there is a special thing u have to do to get a reading off my car--as i recall last time someone took a reading they hooked it to something under the hood--this time both went under the sterring wheel--any suggestions?????????

1. You may have to take it to a dealer to get the readings. in my experience 9 out of 10 times it is one of your 02 sensors. good luck
2. Some times this happens if your battery is low and or if you changed your gas type..........Try unplugging the battery and wait about 5 minutes and then put it back on,,,,,,,If the problem comes from a change of gas grade,,,,,,as soon as the first tank is over and filled again ,,,the light will go away....Good luck.
3. have the dealer do a test.
4. The Computer chip has to be re set.
