Make the decision for me. New truck or keep current truck.?

Lease a 2008,5.3,4x4,Z71, Ext. cab Silverado 1500 for $279.00 per month (Nothing down) for 39mos, 10k miles per year, or keep my paid off regular cab 2000 S-10,2wd, auto, 4 cylinder with 78,000 miles. I am married and children will be in the 1-2 year future. What do you think? (Silverado is so cheap due to employee discounts). I drive about 8600 miles per year. In my part of Ohio, gas is about 3.93 per gallon. I can't fit a child in my truck. I could, but then my wife couldn't go. She has an '03 two door Cavalier (Also paid off), but that would be hard to put a kid in too with the back seat.

  1. Nothing drives like a paid-for vehicle. Save your money, especially if you're having children. I had vehicle payments for 15 years before I got fed up with them.
  2. Keep your old truck. Right now you OWN your truck and you're paying $3.93 for gas. If you decide to lease a new truck you're doing to be paying $279 a month, plus any costs of repairs PLUS the $3.93 for gas. You'll be losing money.
  3. REally depends on ur financial situation. Some people will keep the paid off car and some people will get rid of it. so it really depends on u. Is there anything wrong with ur s-10? if not keep it and save the 279.00 a month so u can BUY a 1500 silv.
  4. I would keep the truck you have.... Because It's paid off. Once you have children there will be unexpected expense that will come up...A truck loan may not be convenient..
  5. Keep your truck, I am sure you can find better things to do with 279 X 39.......not to mention the extra gas and insurance.
  6. Don't lease a vehicle just buy one. Right now is a buyers market for trucks anyways. It seems as though you need the space so getting a new truck would be a good idea. Check to see how much used trucks are going for first. That way you can save some money and get something as good or better. It may be a horrible idea to get a V8 truck especially if you're not used to paying for the fuel costs of one of them. Thats in addition to higher insurance and a car payment. You are going to be adding $400 or so to your monthly budget.
  7. Gas prices, car seats and insurance considered you should keep your truck. WHEN kids become a definite part of the picture you need to do some serious self evaluations - why are you driving a truck? Can you get by with a smaller utility vehicle or a small truck with the extended cab? If you need the size and power then you should still evaluate the life of your truck before getting a bigger one.... A better, cheaper solution is to trade in the wife's car for something more family friendly and retain your truck for the heavy duty jobs - use the smaller more economical vehicle for family outings and trips. Good luck with your decision. PS - my husband refused to part with a truck - we've been through 3 of them trying to accomodate a growing family - he has finally come to the realization that a truck is only a truck - the kids hate being in the backseat of his Silverado an the oldest is only 7! One more growth spurt and his legs are not going to fit anywhere.
