- How many japanese cars do you see on the road today from the "60's","70's ,or "80's? Kinda answers that part of your question doesn't it? Any 2 seater made today and all convertibles. Also pickup trucks
- Cars that eventually become collectable usually are the earliest examples of a particular model that either becomes extremely popular (corvettes, T-birds, 60's muscle cars) or bring about some unique new innovation. Often times these later cars are not initially popular, but become collectable later after their production has ceased, such as the Edsel. So this type would be very hard to predict. The other sort of collectable car would be any high performance or luxury car that is built in extremely limited quantity such as Ferrari, Lambo, Rolls, etc. And yes, I think some of the japanese sports cars from the 70's and 80's are already collectable, such as 280Z, Supra, and RX-7. Cars from today - really hard to say. If you could predict what would make them collectable (other than the rare ones) then lots of people would put one away, and then they wouldn't be as collectable. Part of collectability is that no one thought about it when they were new, so most just wore out or got wrecked and the few that remained became rare.
