- Your best bet is to go to the library and spend some time in the reference section, where there are books for just about every type of glass (and other antiques), showing current values, etc. These books can't be checked out, but it's worth spending the time to go over them. Take pictures of your items to being as reference. Online, you should be able to just type in your glass types on any search engine (I use The Google), and dig around for sites that have current prices. You can also go on eBay, type in what you have, and see if anyone else is selling the kinds of things you have. I've used this method many times to get a rough idea of what my items might sell for. Sometimes you can be pleasantly surprised, sometimes - not so. The actual Antiques Road Show (from PBS) does travel around. Go to their website to see where they will be next. Sometimes organizations local to where you live hold similar events to raise money for charity. The art league in my town had one just this past weekend, where you could bring in up to three items for professional evaluation - but they were charging $5 per item (the money went to a good charity). Generally speaking, to have an item professionally evaluated for worth (useful information if you are planning on having something insured) will cost you - meaning no one is gonna do it for free. Owners/operators of local antiques stores will probably chat with you, but, be wary of what they tell you your item(s) is worth, as they may be undercutting the price in an effort to get you to sell the item to them (which they will then resell at a much higher price). For me, the library and eBay have been the most dependable sources for determining value. Happy hunting!
