On average, how long does it take for a sculptor to complete a project?
I'm doing a project for class and we have to propose a monument idea. We have to do a construction bid and know the exact cost of materials and labor. The block to be sculpted is 12 ft. high x 10 ft. wide x 10 ft. deep. Can anyone tell me an average time of how long it would take for a sculptor to complete a monument that big and how much per hour an average sculptor makes? Thanks in advance!

- Impossible to know. If your talking about sculpting a big round ball, or if your talking about sculpting a man on a horse. The time and the cost is gonna be way different. I could do it in two weeks. But your only gonna get a big fat pot holder. I'm not a sculptor............
- Depends on the material to be sculpted, the amount of detail/complexity of design and the individual sculptor. With something that large, it could take 6 months to a year to complete. Also, you really wouldn't pay a sculptor by the hour. You would negotiate a commission for the work and materials, perhaps building in a bonus if it is completed by a certain date if time is an issue.
- i've spent any where from weeks to months & i have 40 years experience . the final price has nothing to do with time involved , only what your client is willing to pay for it . i'm far faster now than i was 20 years ago & get 10 times more $'s than i did in the begining . you popularity (name) uniqueness of design etc. all define value . get what you can is the bottom line . check my work out at popclt.com & popclt@yahoo is where you can ask for more advice if you's like . i speak regularly at several colleges & art school's on the business of art . I recommend business , public speaking & english classes , & dress for success . I've never taken an art class , completely self taught , no inhibitions & teachers who couldn't make it in the real art scene teling me how to do it is absurd , you want to watercolor , go but some brushes , paint & paper . i hope some of my views give you encouragement . By the way i do have a masters in english/business management & that has been my biggest help as an artist . ta/ta , tp. mullin
