Help in placing a bid in ebay?
Actually, I'm helping a friend in Japan who is interested in purchasing a couple of items (he doesn't speak English, and my Japanese is not the best, by the way) The thing is, because of the time difference, I think, the bidding button has now changed to "place absentee bid". So, does this mean that no bids can be placed while the guy's asleep, or something like that? In that case, what difference would there be between a live auction and a regular one? Thank you very much.

- I deal with ebay alot and have never heard of "place absentee bid" I would research the ebay website and find out what that means.
- Placing an absentee bid usually means that you are going to state the highest amount you would be willing to pay. So if the item starts at $5, and your highest bid is $50, it will start at $5.50 or whatever, and if someone bids $7, it will automatically up your bid to $7.50 (I believe that they do it in 50 cent increments.) If someone comes along and bids $49.00 a minute before the auction ends, the system will automatically up your bid to $49.50. But if I come along and bid $51.00, you will lose the bid unless you enter a new maximum bid. Be careful not to get carried away with the bidding. Decide what you are really willing to pay, and don't budge from that. Bidding as close to the end of the auction also helps, but this can backfire if you're forgetful like I am . . . :-) good luck!
- I think there is a new button that 'watches for you' while you sleep. Make sure your friend has a Paypal account it makes it all go so much easier, you dont' have to give anyone you do not know your credit card number nor worry about money orders getting lost in the mail. PayPal and Ebay work together to cover you if they say you didn't pay its all recorded; if they don't send what they are supposed to you can call in a dispute online. In an auction you just place your highest bid and the auction will automatically progress.. if nobody ever hits your higher bid then you will win. You don't have to be on the computer to win an auction.. just make sure he bids high.
