2. Take it to an auctioneer or an appraiser. From the sound of it it is either actually Japanese and possibly a Tansu? Or Sandalwood and probably Indian. They are expensive and sought after depending on age, wood and origin... Indian chests are of lesser quality and therefore lesser value. Actual Japanese carved wooden objects that are antique are a lot more rare and therefore much more valuable. Go to Ebay and look up either or... Type in... Sandalwood Chest. Indian and then Japanese Then look Up Japanese Tansu chest See which one looks like yours so you at least know how to describe it to an appraiser or properly reference a book. You can't go by Ebay prices though... They are only showing value as in what someone is willing to pay. Not actual value.
