How can I indentify markings on antiques?

I have two vases that my british grandmother gave me. They are small chinese vases that show a man and a women in a garden. There are some use of gold leaf. I want to know more about them, and have heard that you can tell who the maker was by the markings. Does anyone know how I can research the markings? Or of an alternative way to learn more about them?
