What are the karate belts order and are they the same in all martial arts ( Kong Fu, Karate, Tae Kwon Do)?
For all who knows I met a guy at work who is into this stuff and takes Kong Fu. I am getting into this also and I just wanted to know about the belts. Any help is totally apreciated.

- They vary from discipline to discipline. When I took TaeKwonDo (in the ATA), the order was: white yellow green blue red black (degrees 1 - 9)
- ahem...kung fu* different dojos do the belt system differantyl mine goes white yellow orange green purple brown black(1) black(2) and so on until 12th some use blue and red......blue is..after orange(i think) and red is after purple(i think) remember there are different styles of karate...and kung fu is nothing like karate....tho...they are moves..the teachings are different... i wish u luck on the journey of life :)
- Karate has belts, but Kung Fu dosen't. Plus Karate is from Japan, and Kung Fu is from China. The belt order in Karate is pretty much the same as it is in Tae Kwon Do, except that there's a Brown belt right before the black belt. It does vary from art to art. Some diciplines use belts to signify skill, while others just use belts to keep their pants up.
- I believe they differ slightly from one to another, depending on what type of martial arts you are being taught. I would suggest you either ask the guy you met or the instructor you are going to be learning under. Basically they order something like this: White Yellow Orange Green Blue Purple Brown Red Black Again this can change according to the martial arts being taught.
- Kung Fu, more like a religion of sorts with martial arts. Tap the inner strength, etc... (e.g.; Tae Kwan Do, Shaolin, Tang soo do) Karate, straight fighting technique, blunt force, etc... minus the 'spiritual' element (e.g.; Shorin-ryu, Yoshukai karate, Goju-Ryu)
- It definitely varies from school to school. Most Kung Fu schools in my area go White, Yellow, Green, Brown, Black and then the degrees after. The several Tae Kwon Do schools in my area use anywhere from 12 to 16 belts! Probably to max out each student on testing fees. I attend a school that teaches Tae Kwon Do among other things and uses the 16 belt system which is: White, Yellow Stripe, Yellow, Orange Stripe, Orange, Green Stripe, Green, Blue Stripe, Blue, Purple Stripe, Purple, Brown Stripe, Brown, Red Stripe, Red, Black. The 12 belt system omits the Purple Stripe, Purple, Brown Stripe and Brown. I've noticed Tae Kwon Do in general uses the most belts though. As for Karate, the school I go to uses a 11 belt system: White, Orange, Purple-White, Purple, Green-White, Green, Blue-White, Blue, Brown-White, Brown, Black. If you are under 16 Brown-white and Brown are replaced by Red-white and Red. Other Karate schools I've encountered may or may not use the in-between white belts and just use the solid colors (White, Orange, Purple, Green, Blue, Brown and Black). Many times schools will add extra belts to encourage kids by making it appear they are moving fast.
- Itosu-kai Karate, some differences from the others: White Yellow Orange Green Blue Brown Shodan-ho (Brown with Black Stripe) Black 1st degree up to Black 10th degree (usually posthumous) And sure Karate can be spiritual.
- White Yellow Blue Purple Green Brown Black or White Yellow Purple Blue Green Red Black Some systems have blue then purple or purple then blue, also the may have red or brown befor black.
- Not to be pedantic, but 'Kong Fu' translates to 'House of Confucius.' The martial art is spelt 'Kung Fu' or 'Gong Fu.' A lot of Kung Fu schools don't have belts. Some rank by sash color, some by shirt color, some by knots or trim, etc. There is no unified ranking system in Kung Fu and some traditional schools don't have any distinction among students except the length of their study for showing the proper deference. The general color code, however, tends goes from light to dark through the spectrum as you advance in rank. For example, white shirt to black shirt, white sash to gold sash, etc.
- I don't know the Karate belt order, but they are not all the same in different martial arts. In Tae Kwon Do(which is what I take), we have white, yellow, green, sr. green, blue, sr. blue, brown, sr. brown, red, sr. red, level 1 first degree black, level 2 first degree black, level 3 first degree black(which is what I am), level 4 first degree black, level 1 second degree black, etc. The black belts have four levels until you get to either fourth or fifth degree. Hope this helps!
- I take TKD, and I know for sure that Karate belts are different. And are pretty sure that Kung Fu belt are too. White belt Yellow strip Yellow belt Green strip Green belt Blue strip Blue belt Red strip Red belt Black strip Double Black strip Cadent for Black belt (knew to my school. It's a pretty half red half black belt) Black belt!! Then you get four stars and then a new degree. Ten degrees in total. Blah, blah, blah, right? ;D
- All martial arts are different i do Taekwon-do and my belts go: White Yellow stripe Yellow Green stripe Green Blue Stripe Blue Red stripe Red Black stripe Black 1st Dan 2nd dan 3rd dan 4th dan 5th dan 6th dan Master
