- This verries from dojo to dojo. I know my dojo doesn't even operate like this. At my dojo, the kata requirements are just number of katas. For example, for my green belt, I knew 3 "black belt katas" as well as 4 of the standard katas. And for the belt test I did all 7 of my katas, which met the requirement of 5 katas. Sometimes the first kata our white belts learn are one of the more difficult ones, like Kanku Dai, which is considered a "black belt kata."
- Each school may have minor variations in how it structures the kata requirements. Some kata may actually cover more than one kyu, for example. At the Black Belt level it becomes more varied because students are often allowed to pick from a selection of kata. Here is s sample of the kata required to test for the designated kyu level. 8th Kyu – Heian Shodan 7th Kyu – Heian Nidan 6th Kyu – Heian Sandan 5th Kyu – Heian Yondan 4th Kyu – Heian Godan 3rd Kyu – Tekki Shodan 2nd Kyu – Bassai Dai 1st Kyu – Kankyu Dai Again, there will be some variation from school to school, particularly at the brown belt levels.
- TENNO KATA OMOTE TAIKYOKYU (3) HEIAN (5) TEKKI SHODAN BASSAI DAI KANKU DAI ENPI SOCHIN MEIKYO JIIN GOJUSHIHO DAI According to the sylabus these were the required kata to shodan .That is 16 kata .Some have eiliminated TENNO KATA and the 3 TAIKYOKYU KATA making it 12.Some instead of teaching the "DAI" forms will teach the "SHO" forms. NI DAN and up JION JITTE HANGETSU GANKAKU TEKKI NIDAN TEKKI SANDAN CHINTE BASSAI SHO KANKU SHO NIJUSHIHO UNSU WANKAN GOJUSHIHO SHO These are the official kata of SHOTOKAN and may not be taught in the order presented here. However heian kata ARE ALWAYS TAUGHT EARLY ON.
