  8. The lower ranks, before black belt, are referred to as "kyu" ranks, and they count down. Black belt ranks, referred to as "dan" ranks, count up. So for example, you might have a system with seven belts before black belt, then ten degrees of black belt, and it might look something like this: 7th Kyu 6th Kyu 5th Kyu 4th Kyu 3rd Kyu 2nd Kyu 1st Kyu 1st Dan (1st degree black belt) 2nd Dan 3rd Dan ...and so on until 10th dan. The colors themselves tend to vary widely. Generally, the first belt someone gets is white belt, and brown belt is before black belt, although I believe some Korean systems use red before black. In between, there are all sorts of belt colors. In the Shorin-Ryu class I took, the belt colors were white, yellow, blue, green, brown (1 stripe), brown (2 stripes), black. In Brian Winkleman's Isshin-Ryu book, the colors are white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown, advanced brown, and black, with stripes added for filling certain class requirements. In one of George Mattson's early Uechi-Ryu books, the colors were simply white, green, brown and black, with stripes of different colors, numbers and lengths being added to the lower belts as they advanced in their Kyu ranks.
  9. Hello Dajuan! At my school, it was Kempo, and the belt system was this if i can remember. White, yellow, orange, purple, blue, green, brown, black. But, the thing about karate is: All schools are different and will have different belt orders, so you will get different answers. There are also different styles of karate, not just one if you didn't know. Hope I helped!
  10. White Yellow Blue Green Brown Black
  11. i think it depends on the school, actually. Someone could start their own school and use just about any series of colors. Visit my site for frequently updated close quarters combat information, and please support my work by noticing the advertisements. http://www.freewebs.com/einherjer/
  12. For the wife and I we both study Arnis it goes. white. orange yellow yellow one stripe green green one stripe blue blue one stripe red red one stripe black, lots of black over and over.
  13. well, I do International GoJu Karate (IGK) in uAstralia. No clue if location has anything to do with it buuuut, here they are anyway. Oh, and the stripes/tags are basically just coloured piece of tape sort of stuff on the belt that we were wearing before that grading. (So if you got your Yellow stripe or tag, you would have a white belt with a yellow tag or if you got your orange stripe/tag it would be an orange tag on your red belt etc. etc.) White Yellow stripe Yellow Orange Stripe Orange Red Stripe Red Green Purple Blue Brown White stripe Black I know we have a few more belts than most people, but i think it helps to sort out who really wants to do this and also it gives the younger people a chance to...errr...get more mature? (not in a physical way...entirely MENTALLY) xD Hope this helps
  14. Callsignfuzzy looks like he had a very similar ranking system to my school's. It really depends on the school, the style(There are many styles of Karate), and sometimes the instructor. I got my black belt in Shorin Ryu Karate. Most schools that I competed against ( I competed against other styles, not just Shorin Ryu) the belt system had 10 promotional belts (kyu, pronounced like you say the letter "Q") before reaching your black belt: White, gold, Sometimes orange but not often, purple, blue, 3 levels of green, 3 of brown and finally black. Generally there are 10 levels of black and 10th Dan (Dan is Japanese for degree or level , the "a" is pronounced like the "o" in the word "on") was usually a honorary promotion for the masters that had dedicated their entire lives to the art. My Sensei, or teacher, had been studying one style for over 45 years and was only an 8th Dan.There are very few true 10th Dan in the world and even less in the states.
  15. every school and style has there own belt color. i've see mcdojo's with as many as 24 belts before the reach black belt in general there are 7 to 11 kyu ranks (color belts), and 10 dan ranks (black belts) the colors are uselly white, yellow, orange for beginner ranks blue, purple, green for intermediate, the purple and green are change around depending on the school. brown and red for advance then black belt some schools use stripes an certain belts, that varies even more there is no set standard. 1st degree black marks the beginning of you r understanding of the basics. you still have a long way to go through your journey.
  16. traditional belts in karate, like the uniform, are taken from Judo so you have four white green brown black later other colors were added especially in the US where kids get a new rank every month. forget the stories that the color means anything Japanese have historically been extremely clean so a belt having fungus grow on it to make it yellow is a fallacy
  17. Most karate schools have them in this rank- (beginners stage)- White, Yellow, Orange, (intermediate stage) purple, blue, green (advanced stage) brown, red/black, red, black, Black first degree, second degree, and third degree black belt. Thats the way my school is as well. Then we also do sparring at the purple belt level anyone whose not at that stage will learn some other things to help them get to that level. We also learn other things such as gun disarming, and at the red/black level we will learn weapons training.
