Is it generally somewhat obvious determining actual Chinese antiques from the fakes/reproductions?

1. Yes it's really easy, anyone can tell, you don't need to be ab expert or have experience. Just examine it well and its pretty clear if it is handmade or factory-made. Most stores are reputable and you can trust what the vendor says. Because China is so old many antiques that are worth thousands in the USA are so cheap in China. The best deals are found on the street where peasants that have found a special antique in the countryside somewhere try to sell them.
