- Antiques you really aren't going to find in a thrift her in philly. Most stuff like that would probably go through estate sales and other auctions. For decent second hand shopping I recommend Second Mile Center (furniture shop across st too) on 45th between locust and Walnut. Also there's a used furniture store on Baltimore at 46th that's okay too. There's a salvation army on Market at 22nd small but okay. I think some of the local churches also have some thrift stuff I'd check out St. peter's or other churches online info, you might actually find some decent stuff there more towards what your looking for. Outside of the city I know theres a really decent store out in Bala Cynwyd across from the hospital there. The clothing side was so so but the furniture side was pretty decent (tho the prices we're steeper than normal too-not bad for what u get tho). I know there's also a high-end consignment shop for women (I think) in Narberth on Main St.. There are some antiques clothing shops down off South St. (either 3rd or 4th above South). Used bookstore too on South (not sure what cross st but below 7th). I hope this is useful. Have fun.
- I dont know about hunting antiques in a thrift store but there is a thrift store in the portrichman plaza.
- There isn't any one store that is always the best. Thrift stores live by donations, so they have whatever people happen to give them. That means a store might have a goodie one day, then it's sold, and some other store gets something good a few days later. There is no way to tell who will get the best things. Having said that, however, you can increase your chances of hitting on something special if you go to stores and sales run by wealthy people. These stores tend to get more high end merchandise. For example, you might try the Junior League thrift store in Ardmore. 25 W Lancaster Ave Ardmore, PA (610) 896-8828 The Junior League has mostly well-off members (they may be upset at me for saying so, but it's true). That means there may be good things that they have to give away. But that's just one example. Look for other similar charity stores, as well as church bazaars in upscale neighborhoods. This will increase your odds, but no matter what you do, it is mostly luck when you find something special. However, one thing I can suggest is this. While no one store is best, there is a best TIME to hunt. That comes during the holiday season, say from Thanksgiving to the first week or two in January. The holidays make people think more about giving to charity, and the end of the year means that people are also conscious of the tax deduction they get for a contribution. At the same time, most shoppers are busy with their families and with holiday activities, so there is less competition among the treasure hunters. As a result, thrift store inventory tends to rise, and there is a better chance of making a "find." Happy hunting, and good luck!!
