Why did women in the 1950's and before wear girdles, corsets, and garter belts?
Why do you think they put up with it? People say it was because of modesty but today you can wear long beautiful skirts and a modest blouse without putting on corsets and girdles. I am so glad I didn't live back then because I couldn't handled the corset, girdles, or the the garter belts.

- a tiny waist was the thing then... not really for modesty..
- To enhance their figures
- The thing then was to be very small so thats what they did!
- To keep their stockings up. Back in the 50's they did not have "panty hose" only stockings.
- I think they wore them to help hold things in .. like a girdle to help hold in their stomach so it would not look big - or the garter belts to hold up their stockings. Look at the old west movies and the ladies on their who wore long dresses during the hot days. I 've often wondered how they survived the heat.
