- What does the table have on it? Paint or stain? I'll assume stain. There are many ways to refinish wood. For stain there are commercial stain removers that work great. You put it on with a brush,,,use the gel form, let it sit , and scrape the stain off. The solution will make the stain rise out of the wood. Gel works best, especially if it has a lot of nooks and crannies. After the stain is off, you let it dry good, and then sand it down with very fine sandpaper so you don't scratch the wood. Then you can re stain it or if it looks good in natural finish leave it. You may have an Antiques road show treasure ,,in that case leave the stain on !!!! If its a soft wood ,,like pine etc. you may need to put a conditioner on it before you re stain it to make the stain go on even. Polyurethane should be the last coat to protect it when finished, 2 coats.
