How to start a construction company and win city bids?
I'm a young college student who wants to start his own construction comapny that specializes in concrete sidewalk repair. Where do I go to get the skills needed to do that, and what do I have to have for a city to approve a contract? Where do I go to find city sidewalk contracts If I am a small company, can I win bids from the city for small work or do I have to go through sub contracting for that... also are there any other resources for me to tap in terms of contracts

- Do you have experience in running a construction company? Do you have expert knowledge of concrete, specifically as it applies to repairing old, crumbled, spauling concrete sidewalks? If so, then about all you need is a business license, a contractor's bond and a crew. Then, to successfully win the contract, you will probably have to be the lowest bidder. - check your local newspapers for "invitations to bid" on work you can do. Also, depending on the size of your city, there is a company called Dodge Reports that consolidate information about jobs being put out for bids and you can go to their offices and search for jobs in your domain. Dodge DOES have an annual "membership" fee. Even more than cheap prices, the city is going to want to be assured you will be in business for the long term and can warrant your work. If they get the sense this is a part time job or a "let's try it and see what happens" kind of company you will not be allowed to bid on work.
- I will suggest that you first find a job in a construction company. When selecting job, don't give preference to money but to the scope of learning. Since your goal is to establish your own firm, look for a job where you get to meet different people from the industry, so that you can have the network and contacts. You will find it lot easier after a year or two of work experience.
