When bidding commercial fence work to a general contractor, is the subcontractor responsible for all the bonds?

I am beginning to bid commercial work and have noticed that some jobs require bid bonds and others dont. Am I as the subcontractor responsible for the bid bond if I am bidding work to a general contractor or are they as the gc?
