Belt Auction

What happens to old Police Cruisers?

I have read this week in my local paper that the police got a new 2009 Impala as a new Cruiser. My question is what happens to the old ones? Do they auction off old Cruisers to regular citizens or is there some sort of Police Car Salvage place?

Public Comments

  1. They auction them.
  2. Depends where, different departments do different things. Where I live they strip them down, clean them up, and auction them off every few months or so.
  3. auction...or dealerships as fleet vehicles
  4. Most of ours are auctioned off to wholesalers. They either sell them or junk them. Most of our old cars are junk. Many dealers who sell to cab license owners buy them and equip them as cabs.
  5. where i live they auction them off to the public minus the stickers and add owns i got one last aug for 520 bucks and my car hauls @ss
  6. Most are auctioned off. There are some that are offered to small police depts. that do not have the finances to purchase new vehicles.
  7. They are taken in trade by the dealer that was awarded the new bid for the 2009 impalas. The dealer will either try and sell them on their lot or take them to an auto auction. If you are wanting to buy one of these vehicles you can get a hold of your local dealership and see if they can get you one from an auction or if they are getting any in trade.
  8. ricochet hit the nail on the head!
  9. They are stripped of police equipment and sold to blues bands.
  10. We auction off the old ones (with less power of course) every few years or so.
  11. used police cars are auctioned off to the public
