Auctioneering school?

I live in California and have always had an interest in learning auctioneering. The school closest to me is the World Champion College of Auctioneering and their tuition is $2,750 for a 4 day course. Can someone tell me where that cost is in comparison to other schools. Also how does one go about finding employment once the craft is learned?

  1. I am not one, but don't you have to have product knowledge to be an auctioneer? If you were a general auctioneer with no specialty how would you rent yourself out confidently? What is the career experience of the instructors in the WCCA? You would need something similar. I am guessing they were qualified in something else first, like real estate or antiques or art or something, perhaps with some sales training, then entered auctioneering when the opportunity arose. If you just love it, maybe you could get your street cred and experience started by doing auctions for local fund raisers for all sorts of items.
  2. Some are as low as $900. You can never get a job after attending the school. That is the downside of attending the course. When you go to the next auction, watch all the guys walking around the floor signaling bids to the auctioneer. Every one of them attended the school. But they are working for $9 an hour because there are 20 auctioneers for every job opening. You could set up your own auction house and start with furniture or storage facility auctions. Once people get to know you, they will come to you. You do not need to attend school to do this. You just need a friendly manner and a willingness to be a "performer".
