2. The idea is that it's automatic... meaning, you don't have to do it. What happens is this. Say an item is $1.25 right now, but you'ld be willing to pay $100 for it, becuase you really want it!! So, instead of bidding $1.50 to get the highest bid for right now, you can bid $100. Then e-bay does the rest. It will repeatedly place automatic bids for you every time someone else outbids you. This will continue until the computer reaches your max bid of $100. (It won't necessarily bid to your max bid. It depends on how the comptetion is bidding.)
