Should the dealer have discounted my car because it was a Rental?

They didn't disclose that it was a rental to me. I asked and they assured me that it wasn't a rental. Yet, there were HERTZ stickers all over it and for a 1yr old car it sure had a lot of door dings and whatnot. Most people who buy a new car don't park it in tight spots where door dings happen most often. I now know that it was indeed a rental and want to know how much of a dif that would (should) have made in the price.

  1. There is no special deduction for rental cars. Its a used car just like all the other cars on the lot. So they price it as a used car..........md
  2. How do you know the price you paid was not a discounted price? Did you check Kelley Blue Book (www.kbb.com) before you bought? That's the only way you'll know if you overpaid or not. On the positive side, rental car companies usually keep their cars maintained well, although maybe not repair all dents and dings.
  3. none. You say there were hertz stickers all over it? Then you knew it was a rental before you bought it. You saw the door dings and scratches before you bought it. But you chose to purchase the car anyway. Honestly, as a dealer, I like the previous rental cars. Typically they are about the same price as any off-the-street used car. However, Rental companies typically make sure that routine services are performed as shceduled, brakes are checked, oil is checked every time its returned, etc. Typically, they have at least been maintained better than the average car. Have they been abused? Maybe. Hard to say what some people do when they rent a car. But then again, who's to say that Joe Smith didnt abuse the hell out of his personal car before he traded it? The key is to get a good, thorough inspection of any used car before you buy it. Which, obviously, you didnt do. So rental or not, its yours now.
  4. Nope. You bought a used car that had previously been used as a rental. I own and drive 2 of them myself. If you'd done your homework before you bought it, you might have found that out and saved yourself this grief. It's too late now. Enjoy your ex-rental car.
