How many brown belts are there in karate?

I know there is one belt for everything else... i think? well i need to know how many brown belts you need to earn in order to reach a black belt. (it's for a story, sorry but i'd really appreciate it)

1. It depends on the school. There is no standardization on colored belts.

Maddy many traditional Japanese and Okinawan styles of karate have three brown belts before black. 3rd kyu (Sankyu), 2kyu (Nikyu), and 1st kyu (Ikkyu) As you may already know color belts are known as Kyu ranks. They count down in number as I showed. Then at black belt the various black belt levels are known as Dan (pronounced as Don). Black belt ranks count up from first degree (Sho-Dan), as in Shodan, Nidan, Sandan, ...etc. Another thing that may be of help is this. All students that wear color belts are collectively known as Mudansha. All students wearing black belt ranks are collectively known as Yudansha. Hope this helps! ******************* EDIT: Alex, I think some people misunderstood the question To clarify, I'll add this. Most styles of karate have several color belts before becoming a black belt. Although the number and colors, and even the order of colors is different from style to style, one thing is fairly consistent. Most Japanese and Okinawan styles have Brown belt as the last color before a student becomes a black belt. In most of these styles it had been traditional to have the last three belt ranks before black to all be brown. Usually they will use stripes on the belt to indicate if the are 3rd, 2nd, or 1st Kyu. I see someone mentioned that in their school there are four brown belt levels. That is not common historically. I have heard of a few styles having as many as five levels of brown belt brown. Some have one one or two. It varies. As I said the most commonly used has always been three levels.
3. it doesn't work like that. you don't get so many brown belts before you get a black belt. you get a brown belt then you earn the black belt. brown is before black
4. in my school, there are 4 degrees of brown belt.
