What is the exact color order of karate belts?
My 9yo son just got his orange belt in karate, which was the third after white then yellow. I searched the belt colors in google and every site has something different! They all have white and yellow in the beginning and brown and black at the end. But in between they vary with green, blue, orange, purple. So i'm confused as to why some say green and blue before the brown, and others says orange and purple before the brown? Anyone know about karate belts that could tell me? My son's school uses purple after orange.

- The standard belt color system is white, yellow, green, brown, and black. In some Karate school and styles, the color order is white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown, black.
- there is no standard color order. every dojo/style/organization/ has there own. there is no standard system. the person above me doesn't know what he is talking about. the basic guide is white, yellow and orange are beginning ranks blue, purple and green are intermediate, brown black the color order will vary in the intermediate stage. and some schools have additional color belts such as red. there are general 7 to 10 kyu ranks before black belt. i have see schools with as many as 25 ranks before black belt. its all up to the school and instructor as to what the order is and how many belts there will be
- Please ignore the first poster, he doesn't know what he's talking about. You will find that most dojo's have variations in their belt ranks. Most start with the basic order of white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown and then black. Some clubs will stick to that others will add a red belt or purple belt. Some clubs will also have "half belts" or "stripe belts" for younger children to keep them interested. And congratulations to your son!
- IDK i hate karate its a joke to me.
- You are right in that every karate school and every style has different rank systems. There is on system that is then standard. In my dojo, the colors are: White, Yellow, Orange, Blue, Green, Purple, Brown and then black. Some styles have more belts before black. Some have fewer. Some use stripes on each color before going to the next rank. Some do not. Many colors or anyone under the age of 16 is almost assuredly a Belt-Mill/ McDojo/ Rip off / Con game. Until commercialism turned most schools into expensive "day care" centers, there were no children in the martial arts. Minimum age for black belt was 16. even then very few ever made it to black belt. Even the young ones were usually in their late teens or early twenties. It was common to see people take 5 to ten years to reach black belt. Then the real training began.
- Shihan J has said it best. There are variations. The only one you need to worry about is the system used by your school (or your son's to be more exact). So I suggest you just ask your school's teacher.
- It depends on what kind of karate it is in mine ( which i do shotokan ) its white yellow orange green blue blue with a strip in the middle ( or advance blue ) purple advanced purple brown advanced brown then black
