- Read. Get books you can study and take with you to make field trips to museums, historical sites and homes. Check out educational sites, like www.kovels.com and most importantly study. You have to know what could and would have been standard construction, finishes, carvings, etc. for the time the piece was supposedly made. You have to learn to spot forgeries or reproductions and there are a lot of really good ones out there. Specialize in one or two areas, like crystal and china, stemware or servers, a particular era, style and piece of furniture, textiles, garments, etc. Start with just one area to become an expert in that and branch out from there. Test your knowledge by visiting antique and thrift stores and then inquiring what they know about a piece to see how accurate you are.
