Foreclosed home and auction?

Ok, I have a few questions about what happens when a house is put up for auction. At that point is there any way to save it? My family has been trying to work with the mortgage company to modify our loan yet our house went to auction today. Also, when do you get a written notice about the auction? If there is one? We were only informed of the auction after a man came to our door at 11.30 am to look at the house and told us that at 12pm our house would be put up for auction. How long do we have to vacate, or who to call about this? We're packing just in case but really we have no where to go. My grandfather owns the house, I live here to help take care of them and my mother. I was unaware about the delinquent mortgage payments. We have no real income. I get paid to take care of my mom and they get benefits. I live in Oakland, CA if you need to know.

1. No much to say about your situation. But if there was an auction - the bank should have notified you. Its possible that nobody actually bid on your Grandfathers house. When the sheriff comes to put you out, then that's it.
2. THE SAME THING HAPPEN TO US WE HAVE TWO WEEKS TO MOVE AND WANT ANY BODY LET US RENT FROM THEM.
