  1. This is the typical order White, Yellow, Orange, Purple, Green, Blue, Brown, Red, Black, Then Degrees of black (aka a 7th degree blackbelt) This can differ from style to style but is usually above Other common varients are red before brown, purple after blue etc or some colors missing from the list The colors come from the idea that waaay back when people learned martial arts thier belt would get dirtier and dirtier untill it was black meaning that they were well trained.
  2. there is no set standard. it all depends on your instructor, dojo, style or organization. i have see as few as 6 kyu belts (below black) and as many as 25 kyu ranks. a legitimate school will have around 10 or 11 no more then that. the color order will vary from one to another but in general white, yellow and orange are beginner ranks blue, purple, green are intermediate brown (usally 3 levels denoted by stripes) is advance. black (dan) (1st degree means you have an understanding of the basics and are ready to begin your training) 1st to 3rd degree black are beginning ranks. the red belt varies a lot in its placement and ic can range from a low kyu rank to a dan rank this question gets asked at lest once a week http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=An0dC_wlLR.7pQVMaM4BkNYjzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20090831140113AAEx84i

  5. There were no color belts 90 years ago. But when karate was accepted into the Japanese society from Okinawa 70 yrs ago, karate modeled after the Judo belt system. In the very beginning, were only white and black belt. Then Judo was introduced into the Japanese school system and then different color belts were created to boost the youngsters interest. Now, each school has their own color belt system and they also have a different meaning behind the color, but in general the white belts are for beginners and the black belts are for more advance students. Hope this could help.
  6. Most schools and styles have their own system that typically works from lighter colors to darker colors. Then there are solid colors, single striped belts, double striped belts, two tone and three toned belts, camouflaged belts, etc. On top of that, some schools use stripping at the end of a belt to show advancement within a belt level. It's really limited to the imagination of the person in charge of the school or style. 8. It varies depending on the style of karate. I for example study kyokushin and the belts are as follows White Red Blue Yellow Green Brown Black Then it goes with the various dans of black. Up to ten i think but only mas oyamas been a tenth dan
  9. when i used to do karate, it went: White belt red belt yellow belt orange belt green belt blue belt purple belt brown belt 1st Dan black 2nd Dan black 3rd Dan black 4th Dan black etc ... i think until about tenth Dan
  10. example_ white yellow orange purple blue green brown brown black tip black-white (jr.bb or bb candidate) black (expert) black-red (master) red-white (senior master) solid red (head of system) Student ranks can also include stripes, tips, blocks, or other things designating gradations. In korean arts, red is brown and blue beats green. Many schools do not have orange or purple.
