What are a few reasons why we shouldnt have to wear seat belts?
I have to debate why we shouldnt have to wear seatbelts against my opponent who says why we should. But my opponent has had more time to gather their information since i am new to the debate class and shes had the assignment for a while now. Can i get some help on reasons why we shouldnt be forced to wear seat belts?

- You should have the right to die anyway you wish. You can save a few seconds getting in and out of the car. Freedom of expression. Less wear and tear. In a severe crash, rather than getting life threatening injuries and either living in pain the rest of your life or in pain until you die later at the hospital; you get put out of your misery sooner.
- A friend of mine knew a girl who was actually sliced in half by her seat belt when she wrecked because the crash was so bad. I had 9 friends get into wrecks this summer, so here's two: One boy, the seat belt broke a few ribs and it did something to his spleen. There were three people in the car with him. He was the ONLY one wearing a seat belt and he was the most hurt. The other boy, the seat belt just cut him, but it hurt him either way.
- "Natural Selection in Progress" - it facilitates the goals of the Eugenicists to allow the less intelligent humans to selectively eliminate themselves by not thinking to put on seatbelts. As such, it is good we encourage stupid people to choose death, as that is the best outcome for society. Would you like Fries and a Swastika with that?
- To tell the truth, there aren't many reasons you shouldn't. Seat belts have been around for more than couple of decades and there really isn't a reason why anyone shouldn't wear them. There was even a person who debated furiously about not wearing seat belts and was later killed in a car crash that he otherwise would've been saved in if he was wearing a seat belt. Here is a link that I think may help you with your debate, I really liked the opponents answers: http://www.debate.org/debates/Seatbelt-and-helmet-laws-should-be-abolished./1/
- The media has fooled the public into believing that seatbelts save lives, but what it doesn't tell you is that it is because of seatbelts that lives are in danger in the first place. In the same style as condoms, seatbelts give individuals a false sense of security, believing that they can drive recklessly without fear of the consequences. It not only distorts the safety of the user, but as condoms promote sex among children, seatbelts actually promotes reckless driving among drivers. Reckless driving has irreversible impacts on both individuals and society as a whole. It helps build a stereotype Americans are reckless drivers that should not be behind the wheel of any automobile. That is why this delinquent behavior must be stopped. This was just to entertain your question, I totally and completely agree with the law! Seatbelts save lives! SO BUCKLE UP!!
- You definitely should wear seat belts. Statistically very well proven to reduce injuries and save lives. There is no legal justification for mandating that you wear seat belts.
- I do hope you wear a seatbelt after this, but this ought to challenge your opponent pretty good. This is one debate that you are supposed to lose even if you get an "A", if I need remind you. 1) A person might take less risk if they know that theyre not wearing one. 2) They are uncomfortable. 3) During certain accident types, seatbelts do cause more bodily injury than when without. For example, when hit broadside, the seatbelt pins you close to the door, and your legs are more likely to be crushed than if you could slide your body away. Your opponent will only be able to refer to a general statistic, which combines all accident types. From this statistic, (s)he will also quote that you're 3 or 4 times as likely to live if you arent thrown from the car. But this doesnt prove that accidents like a broadside arent ones that are the least preventable. It is possible to drive in such ways that avoid just about every accident type. As long as you chose not to drive at night or in bad weather, for instance. What statistics dont tell us is something of this nature: that when looking at all accidents, the broadside isnt that common, but when looking at fatal accidents, the broadside is much more common (failure to yield on a left turn). 4) YOUre opponent will also come at you with something along the lines of... when youre car stops suddenly, your passengers become projectiles, and they can fly forward and break your neck. You can refute this by combining argument 3) with the fact that front seat passengers are more likely to be crushed in a broadside, failure to yield on left turn, and that theyd be less likely to injure the driver, than those coming from the backseat. good luck
