Male v.s. female belts?

Ive always wondered this but, why do males belts go to the left (of the person wearing it) when the male shirts and pants go to the right. And females are the opposite.

1. I just took a fashion class last semester, where we talked about how in the past it has always been more masculine, for men to wear their pants and belts that way. if a woman was seen wearing her clothing this way it was like really bad i guess. But thats not the case anymore. Now womens jeans are actually made the same way as mens. So, I dont think the belt thing really applies anymore...
