Will the check engine light on my car eventually go out?

I bought a fuel cap about 4 months ago for my old chevy cavalier. The check engine light came on and has stayed on since I bought the after market cap. I bought it at a discount auto parts store. I took the car to my mechanic and he said that I needed to buy an original gm fuel cap. I noticed today that when I was putting on the new cap that there was a really strong gas smell coming from the fuel door of the car. The old cap smelled really strong. The error code on the car was for the fuel evap system. Will the error code eventually go out after a while or will I have to have my mechanic reset the system? Thanks

  1. These lights can be reset usually yourself (as long as your certain there is no problem with the car), i reset the light on my wife's acura a few weeks ago after i gave it a service. Just do a search online for "how to reset Chevy nova maintenance light" etc and something should pop up. There was a hidden button in my wife's car i just had to hold it in for 10 seconds and the light went off. Ive also reset the airbag light before after a fuse blew, there are many guides online that will tell you how to do these things if you search for them.
  2. Alot of times you can reset the "warnings lights" by just discontecting the negative battery cable for 10 seconds and then reconnecting it.
  3. Disconnect the cars battery then reconnect it a few hours later and it should be cured unless another fault has developed in the meantime
  4. well if the cap is for your car then chevy has a malfunctioning sensor. you can research how to turn it off your self and after that you will know if the light is coming on for that reason or not.
  5. to reset the check engine light, disconect the battery. i have heard a minute to hours. i know on my grand am it has to be disconected for about a half hour to get my light to reset.
  6. Check and see if the cap is on right if it is,you might have a problem some were?Good luck
  7. The answer is yes. If you cure the problem that is bringing the light on, the light will go off by itself after 80 miles.
  8. JUST A SECOND. clear the code if it comes back ! you have a problem still.
  9. yes, you should always use GM fuel caps. they are designed specially so that there is a good seal. take your car to advance auto or auto zone, and theyll check the code for you. if its still just the evap system, tell them you had just bought a new cap and put it on. they should then clear the code
  10. Buy a GM fuel cap. Reset the light buy disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes
