Wearing two karate rank belts at the same time?

A karate instructor I knew would wear two belts when he would go to visit Peter Urban's dojo. He was ranked under Urban and by another instructor in a different goju system. He would wear a red and white blocked rokudan belt with his regular black belt over it. Why??? I know all belts do is hold up your pants but I am curious.

  1. that is normally done to say that they are trained in more than one discipline or is done for decor
  2. Sounds like he has an ego proplem. And a big one at that. I find it hard to believe sensei Urban would allow that.
  3. Very inmature , incorrect and disrespectful for "Peter Urban......" Fake masters are doing that , real -truth masters do not need to proof anything . I have black belt Tae Kwon Do , Hap Ki Do , Karate does not mean I take all of them to visit another dojo .hahahah . I take one , highest rank -4th Dan Tae Kwon Do .Even go to Karate Dojo .
  4. Sounds stupid to me and there is no reason for such a thing to occur. Why wear anything but a black belt anyway. All those pretty colored master belts are a joke...they are ego belts...that is all. I was awarded my Renshi, Kyoshi and Shihan belts and have never worn them but still wear my regular black belt with no BS stripes or anything on it. Honestly I feel that those Master belts were created to show who is higher than whom but that should be easily noticed when in a dojo who the Master is...no stupid belt should be needed to prove this.
  5. Ego. Personally I don't wear any belts when I visit other schools, unless the instructor says it's okay.
  6. In over 42 years I thought I'd heard about everything imaginable concerning the wearing of martial arts belts. This one takes the cake. It sounds to me as being arrogant, ignorant, disrespectful, or just plain ridiculous. Take your pick! Personally I can not think of a single good or practical reason for such action. Makes me wonder what this guys attitude is? NOTE: the red and white belt made of red and white panels sewn end to end is known as a Hanshi belt.
  7. Makes no sense to me! Never heard of that. Very Strange. The paneled belts are relatively new in some of the Okinawan systems. In fact some do not use them. Taba Sensei, Nagamine Sensei, Onaga Sensei, and others just wear black belts.
  8. Like you said... All belts do is hold up your pants... So why wear two of them??? This is flat out ignorant and pointless... There is no reason to wear two belts... Ever... Only the black belt is needed...
