How many different belts are there in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Is it the traditional sequence of white through black belts? Or is there a different order or different coloring system? Also, how long (on average) does it take to become a black belt?

- White, blue, purple, black. Sometimes more belts are added for kids, since you cannot be a black belt until you are 18 years old. It takes roughly about 10 years to get a black belt.
- From Lowest rank to highest rank: White belt, Blue belt, Purple Belt, Brown Belt, Black Belt, Red Belt (Only 2 people have ever attained a red belt).
- It is a different system, and is highly regulated through both skill and age; which is important since the belt represents a division you will need to be able to be competitive in. It usually takes 8-12 years of dedicated training to reach Black Belt in BJJ. Ranks are as follows: I . WHITE – Beginner, any age II. GREY – 04 to 06 years of age III. YELLOW – 07 to 15 years of age IV. ORANGE – 10 to 15 years of age V. GREEN – 13 to 15 years of age VI. BLUE – 16 years of age or older VII. PURPLE – 16 years of age or older VIII. BROWN – 18 years of age or older IX. BLACK – 19 years of age or older Senior ranks (over 50) can also include the Master Ranks of: Red and Black (7th and 8th degree) Senior II (over 65) can include the Grandmaster rank of: Red Belt (9th degree) There is also a "Founder" rank of 10th degree RedBelt, but all who carry this rank have died, and no one else is permitted to reach it. __________________________ Sam- RedBelt has been attained by many more than 2 people. My first teach (Fransisco Mansor) is a Redbelt, and I believe there are 6 others besides him that reached Redbelt outside the Gracie Family.
- white, blue, purple, brown, black, red- there are stripes through all the belts. and there are different belts for kids.
- The one's they stole from Judo.
- white blue purple brown black black and red red(only helio had a red belt in the world) also theres stripes to ur belt depending on ur academy, usually u need 4 stripes to show ur progress at that belt level, some schools make u get 4 stipes before u get promoted. bb usually takes 10 yrs. maybe less or more depending on how much u train
- The Asian belt system was originally just white and black. All of the other colors were created by outsiders for marketing purposes. In BJJ, the sequence is White, Blue, Purple, Brown, and Black. It takes about 10 years of commitment to earn a Black belt ASSUMING YOU FIGHT AND WIN IN TOURNAMENTS ALL OVER THE STATE OR COUNTRY. If you just practice at your martial arts school, you cannot earn a black belt that way (at least not from a decent instructor). You have to learn AND BECOME A CHAMPION.
