What happens once you win an auction on ebay?

I just started ebay and i would like to know the normal procedure after you win an ebay auction. do you send them money first or do they ship the item first? what exactly happens and how do you know that you wont get ripped off?

1. You send the money first. Normally by PayPal, but any method they accept is OK. You have recourse through eBay if the item does not arrive, or is not as described.
