does a bad idler in the car make noise?

my car was making noise so i took it to the mechanic and he said my idler was bad and my alternator belt. does that make any big difference in performance such as quick take off?..just wondering. the car will be fixed tomarrow. the guy is installing a gates timing belt..alternator belt and idler for 180. not bad huh? let me know your input. thanks! p.s i have a 1995 dodge neon 5 speed sohc thats what it was doing. it was rattling pretty bad!
