Looks like I broke down my selection: Ruger P95 or SR9?

It seems I have done my research and now I am considering these two 9mm handguns. They are priced relatively close and the reviews seem to be great for both. Since this is my first pistol, do you have any recommendations? The SR9 is a striker fire and the P95 has a hammer. Basically that is the main difference and the SR9 holds 2 more rounds and the slide is of a slimmer complexion. Here is the link to show you both. Thanks.

  1. Get the SR9. The P95 is rugged, but way oversized. Pick one up and find out for yourself.
  2. Both are fine weapons.......handle them first. The SR9 feels a little thinner and is my choice of the 2. Both are well built and are a good value. I have seen both on sale for around 300.00.
  3. I honestly don't like either one of these guns. The P95 is big but.....the P95 was actually awarded a contract for 5000 pistols for the Iraqi security forces. The gun as designed as a service firearm for police and military. The SR9 on the other hand is marketed as a backup/concealed carry gun. On April 9, 2008, Ruger recalled the SR9 because under certain conditions it can fire if dropped with the manual safety off and a round in the chamber. The SR9 has a horrible heavy trigger, the rear sight is flimsy, the safety is so stiff that it is extremely hard to operate without shifting your grip and the magazine release is the stiffest I have ever experienced on any handgun in existence (including heel release) I have handled and fired both of these guns. I was able to be a little more accurate with the P95 than with the SR9. They have both been reliable for me the few times I've fired them and I can report I had no malfunctions with either. If I had to choose between these two, I would take the P95. If it were up to me I would recommend a different pistol but that is not the question so I will keep my opinion on that subject to myself.
  4. My P 95 is an excellent weapon and I prefer a hammer to a striker fire weapon.
  5. Either gun is O.K., but I'd keep looking. The P95 gives you hammer control and second stike capability, critical in a defense gun. SR9 was rushed to market and recalled, and that can't be good. There are so many really good quality 9mm's out there. I'd look at a SIG, or perhaps a Springfield Armory, or even a Tanfoglio. Ruger makes a fine gun, but they missed the boat, I think with the rather clunky P95 and recalled SR9.
  6. So, unless the SR9 really doesn't fit you - I would choose that. A couple of reasons: 1) It is much thinner, yet has higher capacity. 2) It doesn't have that ridiculous mag release design that the 95 has. Highly counter intuitive, non - ergonomic and slow. 3) It has a normally rounded trigger design as opposed to the flat paddle style of the 95 which I find uncomfortable in DA in particular. 4) I find the P95 to have only average accuracy. I've shot a couple of SR9's and some were better than the P95, but none were worse. Overall the P95 is an older design which is rugged and well proven, but not, at least for me, all that compelling or likable. Plenty of people shoot them though so that is definately a preference. However, I would absolutely say that the SR9 is a more modern pistol which the sorts of improvements that have come with newer designs. Thinkingblade
