eBay Bidding!?!?

i was bidding on this book and its the high bidder was bidding 6.40 so it i needed to bid 8.40 or more. so i put my bid in and confirmed it but it showed that i was outbid by the same bidder. it showed he had bid 8.50 then. but last time i looked it was the 6.40. i kept doing it just to make sure i mistaken it and it did it again. it was like the person set his account up to where he was the high bidder no matter what. is that possible?

1. It's called proxy bidding. You enter the max you will pay for the item and ebay will automatically out bid other people until your max is reached.
2. Of course. He must really want that book or just can't be at his computer when the auction ends. He has put in the maximum he will pay for that book. You just haven't reached that maximum bid yet.
