buying cars from a police impound a good idea?

i need my first car and its gotta be cheap. im looking for something under 3g will my local police department be a good idea to buy? how do the cars end up at the police impound in the first place and not at some other random auctions around town? the more information i get from people instead of wesites the better it is. thx

  1. The impound auction is the last place that you should be looking. Cars in the impound auction usually were abandoned on the side of the road because they quit running usually because of a blown engine or transmission. If the car were worth anything the owner would have paid the towing and reclaimed the car. Most of the cars do not have keys and you are not allowed to try and start them. Minimum bid is usually $100 and on top of that you need to pay to tow the car out, charge the battery and make a key. Then when you have done all that you will find that the car is not worth fixing and you can junk it for $25. There will be other buyers there that drive up the price on anything that might be worth buying.
