How can I find local horse auctions?

I have used various search engines in order to find horse auctions in my area (southern california) only to be disappointed. I am specifically looking for cheap OTTBs and since California is a large contributor to the racing industry, I find it hard to believe that they're aren't any :P ..

1. i don't know about horse auctions, but a friend of my moms goes to local (but small) horse races and watches them. once they're finished she'll go and find a horse that looses often and asks the racer or the owner how much they would sell it for. she's gotten 2 horses that never won races for free! they costed the owners more to keep then they made back in races, so they just gave him away. this happened twice and she finds pretty cheap horses all the time.
