When using ebay, is it best to use automatic bidding or doing it manually?

Like, I know people wait till the very last few minutes to bid, but why do they do this if one can use the automatic bidder that does it for you??

1. Automatic bidding (or proxy bidding) is where ebay is bidding on your behalf.
