ebay -How soon before an auction ends can a maximum bid be placed?

I was reading on ebay that an automatic bid (maximum bid?) can be placed only days or hours before. Can it be placed minutes before the auction ends? There's something I really want, and I wanted to place a very high bid at the very end. Can I do that?

1. 1 second, don't push your luck too close, you have to get your bid in, then someone else has the time left to counter bid.
