Where to start with antique engagement rings?
I just don't know where to look, can internet sites be trusted? Also, I want a ring thats actually worth something, but I like the idea of a ruby ring, and they don't seem to be worth much at all. What era, in your opinion has the best rings?

- Look for antique stores via the net then go to the local ones 1910-35 seem to be more ornate as well as the mid 1800. Rubies are worth less then diamonds but settings also play a role. When looking at antique shops you will find prices vary so shop around enjoy the hunt and pick what will appeal to you long term a wedding ring etc. is meant to be a life time purchase not an investment opportunity.

- the victorian era is probably the most popular, but i love art deco designs. here are a couple of sites to look at. http://antiquerubyrings.net/ this site has the various eras listed and described. they have many great looking pieces which range from 3 or 4 thousand to several hundred dollars....one piece i really love is the wedding band on their third page which is diamonds and rubies together set in white gold which would look stunning with a ruby engagement ring. the band by iteself is 2660 dollars so there is plenty of value there. http://www.sylviasantiques.com/antique-rings/ruby-rings several lovely selections from a few hundred to about 1800 or so.
- Go to a jeweler that handles estate jewelry. Usually, that is not a chain, but a local jeweler. Also, you can look for antiques dealers that handle estate jewelry. You will need a jeweler's appraisal to know if it is worth much. Estate jewelry usually sells for less than new jewelry, because it is pre owned.
- i would look in the internet and if you like one do some background checking on the company also look for antique stores around you
