Clarification on shill bidding?

Today I just found out that what I attempted to do was illegal. Shill bidding. I am selling these headsets, and I think the price was too low so I made a new eBay account just to boost it up a little bit. But when I was about to place a bid, it notified me because the 2nd account had the same address and told me that it was called shill bidding which was illegal. From there, I was like oh no. I didn't even know what I was doing was illegal. So I didn't place a bid because what the notification told me. So does this mean I will be facing consequences or was that notification was like a warning? So attempting to place a bid, but notified but didn't place a bid, is that considered shill bidding or is it considered shill bidding when the bid is PLACED?
