Belt Auction

What do I need to do to get seat belts put in my 1967 Mustang and how much would it cost?

I just turned 17 and bought my first car which is a newly restored 1967 Ford Mustang 390 Auto big block. I'm in love with it. The only problem: no seat belts. I've talked to some people and heard that there's different ways to install seat belts, but you can't always do it. What would be the best way for my car and how much would it cost me?

  1. Sounds dumb but put racing seats with a 5 point harness in it would be cool I think. Or junkyard find foxbody or stangs that are under year 95 put the seats from another stang with the seat belts just fabricate them to the fram to your stang. And if u don't wanna do it yourself go to like a tint shop usually they do stuff like that to.
  2. it depends on what you want, the cheapest thing would be just a lap belt, which was probably all it came with anyhow, you can probably find this online at like original parts group for example if you want factory seatbelts, summit racing may have generic seatbelts, and then you can go to a dealer and have a expensive lap shoulder belt seat belt installed, or a five point racing harness, some local auto parts stores have lap belts for sale, I found some in a thrift store, brand new for 3 bucks. most dealers will have whatever belt is recent in stock within a seven year period.
  3. As above stated you should go with a 4 point or 5 point racing harness if it's legal in your area...very easy to install...usually. Otherwise you're looking at something replica or universal such as: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/shop_parts/seat_belt/ford/mustang.html I'm not sure if the simple lap belts are still legal...probably if they were factory equipment.
  4. Order the catalog from the link below. If you get basic lap belts like what were factory options, then you can get them cheap while keeping the original factory look. You could go with a 5 point harness, but they get to be a pain, especially if you have a kid you wanna haul around with you. I think the lapbelts in my Chevelle was 30 bucks a piece, and came with the male/female sections as a kit. Check out NPD or some websites online, they might even give you step by step directions per specific model. If you can change your own oil, you can probably install them, as the old school mustangs were pretty shade-tree mechanic friendly. You can also check eBay or junk yards for factory seat belts that would be dirt cheap..Good Luck!
  5. Don't go with the harness unless you have a roll bar. Improper installation of racing harness will only cause more serious injuries. Search 'spinal compression and racing harness'. Besides with old stock bucket seats, the straps will slide off or you sliding with the straps. You won't be able to reach the radio or the heater/vent/etc I installed modern seats and a shoulder belt mounted onto the seat like what a convertible car has in my 65 Mustang. Got the seat belts from a wrecking yard.
  6. Check Hemmings Motor news. They advertise parts for all muscle cars, including mustangs. check all the parts between 1964 and 1990. Did you say it was a restored '67?! I'm so jealous! You might be able to bring it to a few car shows every now and then. My dad used to have a '72 Cutlass. Man do I miss that car...
  7. Check an old parts catalog or go to a car show that has older mustangs and talk to a couple of people there. Car clubs can help also.
  8. In 1967, seat belts were standard equipment.(Lap belts only). The mounting holes in the floor should be there. Lift up the carpet and take a look. OEM belts..try E-Bay or a junk yard.
  9. All 67 Mustangs came with just a lapp belt, with the exception of factory Shelby Mustangs. Try Glazier's Mustang Barn in Pennsylvania for a good used set of belts, or any other business that specializes in 64-73 Mustang parts.
