In case of V-belts used in power transmission, on which sides of the belt does it contact with the pulley?

Public Comments

  1. Only the sides of the belt contact the pulley. If the belt rides on the bottom of the pulley groove, it is too small.
  2. Transmission belts usually have proprietary designs which may differ significantly, but in continuously variable transmissions the contact is usually on the flanks in order to permit diameter variation of one of the pulleys through the variation of the distance between the two halves of the pulley. Traditional, solid-cross section V-belts: only the two sides (inclined surfaces). Poly-V (toothed V-belts): the same, but with tighter bending radii; they also last longer.
  3. Always in V belts side grooves are intact with the pulley. If the belt inner side is in contact with the pulley inner groove then it indicates that the belt fitted was wrong.
