why do girls wear garter belts under their dress to prom?

prom is coming up and a lot of my friends are saying they have their garter belts already and asked if i have mine, why are they wearing them under their dress?? like i dont understand why..

2. Because it's sexy I guess. Prom for a lot of teenagers is (unfortunately) about losing their virginity. Removing of the garter signifies loss of purity I guess.
3. that's not a tradition i've ever heard of. for wedding yes, but never for prom. there is no point in it, and if you don't want to wear one then don't.
4. I've never heard of girls doing that for prom.
