Bird Experts Look Here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
I went to an animal auction 4-2-08 and I bought a male cockatiel for $60. The guy that was selling it said they were very tame and you could hold it on your arm, finger, and shoulder. Everytime I put my hand next to the cage it hisses at me. I am afraid to touch it. Will it bite me? I NEED ANSWERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (please?)

- it will .. feed him treats from your hand .. it will catch on that you are its friend =D
- I raise these birds. What's going on is the bird senses mistreatment. Obviously you have either tried to or have abused the bird. Please stop this and take it to a vet for medical attention.
- Hell yes it will bite.Depending on how old it is you might be able to train it ..the older it is the more difficult.. Do some research on bird training
- yeah. it sounds like you got an evil one! ...just kidding. ...it's probably just scared. open the cage and let in come out (make sure you have a small secure room so that it can't fly away too far) Let it get used to you, and give it treats to let it know you are not trying to hurt it, and it will then understand you are good and not bad. Hope that helps. Good Luck!
- i have 1 too he was like that as well but if you just talk to him ok this sound stuped but try playin clasical music 4 him and if u want to try holdin him where like gardin gloves that he cant poke threw but gl tell me wat happens
- It might bite you, but a cockatiel bite won't kill you. Just move very slowly and clamly around the bird and you should be ok. try working with him IN the cage first instead of trying to get him out if he is not hand tame. Hold your hand in the cage but don't force your hand on him. Do this every day. You can also try holding some millet spray in your hand and seeing if he will take it. When he is finnally ok with your hand in his cage, then slowly put your finger under his chest near his feet and gently push up. Give him an "up" comand. when he perches on your finger just sit still and let him get used to this. eventually you will be able to take him out this way. Good luck.
- It's a new bird it has to get used to you. Here is how you get it to be used to you: 1. Buy it treats and toys. 2. Put the toys in its cage. 3. Give him the treats and pet him while he is eating it. You need to get him to love you first. Afterward you need to practice making him not hiss, whenever you would hold him and hiss just tap his beak and say no. When he stopped hissing but he wants to go back into his cage practice being away from the cage.
- Uhhh...you may have been flim flammed. If he hisses at you, he may have been mistreated. Or maybe he's just really scared and stressed over the move. Either is likely, caged birds are very sensitive to change and it's stressful for them not to be able to fly away from "danger". Imagine if you were in a scary situation and you couldn't run. How would you act? Maybe even hiss? You will have to wait until he trusts you which means being very gentle and quiet and never pushing him further than he wishes to go. Don't touch him until he reacts in a friendly and trusting way towards you. See to his needs quietly, be slow and gentle, speak to him softly and often. While you wait, do a lot of research on the care and treatment of cockatiels so that when he's ready, you've got it down. If he's young, and you are consistent, there is hope that you could be great friends and he will eventually do what the man claimed he could already do when you bought him. Think of him not as an obedient pet, but a scared living creature that could eventually become really close and important to you. Does he have a name?
- it takes a bit for the bird to adjust to its new home and will be scared at first. Dont take it out for the first week or so until he is used to his suroundings. If he is still acting like this get him used to your hand near the outside of the cage. Just sit there and wistle/talk to him. after about another few days/week try putting your hand INTO the cage this time, if he bites dont pull back becouse that lets him know that he can control you, which you dont want. just let him get used to your hand near him for a while, leaving it in longer and longer each time. If he appears to be stressed take your hand out. after another week or so you can try taking him out and holding him, he just needs to get used to his new home and being handled again. dont let him know your afraid and dont make him afraid. NO fast movements, even if he just bit you.
- Simply put your finger up to the birds tummy and say come on step up, and it should step up right away, but if it is not tamed it will try to get away from you when you offer your finger to step up on. Next time you go a auction to buy a bird make sure YOU stick your hand into the cage yourself trying to get it to step up and if it doesn't don't buy the bird.
- Chances are he was probably lying, pet auctions are usually where breeders (of any animal) go to get rid of sickly animals or wild animals so they can make a small profit. I don't advise anyone to buy pets at auctions unless you get to see them first
- i rescued a tiel 2 days ago, her name is sweetie because she is so nice i was told.................. not!!!! she hissed and tried to bite me and the only way i got her to stop was by taking a bite, i let her bite me once without flinching or jumping back and guess what? it didnt hurt!!!! i can now hold her and pet her, even kiss her- so do my kids. oh yeah, the reason she never bit her previous owners was because she was kept in the back room and not allowed out of her cage.
