Belt Auction

I have a 1986 Jeep Cherokee with no key. Can I get one from the dealer?

Ok, before you criticise me, let me explain. My dad bought me a 1986 Jeep Cherokee from an auction. It came as a fixer upper, and there was no key. The doors are unlocked, and I know exactly how to get by without a key, but Dad wants to get the original. I'd prefer to just get a new ignition for $10 from the local auto parts store than go several towns away to the Jeep dealer to get a key when I'm almost positve they can't do it since it's so old. I can't convince Dad to go the easy way, so now I've told him I'd find out about it, so here I am. Would they have it on record? How much does it cost? Although I'd rather go the easy way, I'd like to be able to lock my doors. We have a short budget, especially since we have to fix it in the first place.

  1. Try a locksmith. They would probably have the key code to make a replacement.
  2. Keys are matched to the ignition switch cylinder- that is why not just any Jeep key will work. Chances are that the dealer would not be able to get you an original key and just try to sell you a new lock cylinder- at a higher marked up price than you should pay. Best bet is to go with your idea and get a whole new ignition cylinder with key and replace the entire thing. Just make sure it is a Jeep Cherokee ignition cylinder that you are getting, otherwise the wiring won't match up.
  3. No the dealer will not be able to decode the key with the Jeeps VIN unless the parts department still has the old key code books. Since its all computered filed , the system dosent go back 24 years. Just call them instead of driving out and wasteing your time, Tell dad to get a lock smith to decode the cylinder and cut a key for you
