Lawn mower belt tension?

I have an older Murray lawn tractor. I bought a new belt for it, which fits on really really tight. The problem is that you can't push in the clutch, because the belt wont stretch that far. Is the belt suppose to tighten when you press in the clutch? Thanks

1. The tension should be released from the belt when the clutch is pushed in and tighten when let out. You either have the wrong belt or it is installed incorrectly. Sounds like you may have the belt on the wrong side of the tension/clutch pulley.
